Following are links to some sites I think might be useful. I'll add more as I can.

Get Local Media Coverage

In closed countries, this information will do you no good at all, but if you are in a reasonably open country, this guide on now to get free publicity from local media - particularly newspapers - may be helpful. The site focuses on U.S. media, but it is likely many of the principles are equally valid elsewhere.

Work from Anywhere

Willing to work part time for some extra money? Here are some sites that offer information about over-the-Web freelancing. I haven't tried any of these, but I believe they all operate by matching freelancers with companies. Either you look for a proposal you can tackle, and respond, or you post your resume and companies email you if they think they have a job you can do.

Cheap Phone Rates

Need to call home? You can actually make phone calls through the Internet these days, and it's supposed to be a lot cheaper than other methods. If I understand properly, and I'm not sure I do since I've never used it, you make the call through your computer, using a headset, but the person on the other end talks to you through their telephone.

Here are a few of these companies:

  • Yahoo! Voice
  • Net2Phone.com

Here is another interesting phone site:

  • LD.Net Best long distance rates

    Secure Communications

You may at times wish to send email that cannot snagged off the Internet and read by prying eyes. A series of (often free) products using PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) encryption provides pretty good protection. PGP uses a public and private password, or "key." Think of it as a lock box for which there are two keys. One, the public key, is available to anybody. With it anyone can lock a message in a box and send it to you. However, the public key cannot unlock the box. Only the private key, which you keep secret, can do that.

The United States has laws against the export of some encryption software. If you are outside the US, there is an international version you can use.

I have heard, however, that some people have been expelled from countries simply for using PGP in their emails. So depending on your situation, you may wish to use it selectively.

    Here are several PGP sites:

  • PGP International
  • Download.com Search on "PGP" and take your pick of downloads. The products are rated and the better ones are labeled "popular."

    Currency Conversion

    Universal Currency Converter
This is a very cool tool. Enter a currency amount, the currency you want to convert from, and the currency you want to convert to. It instantly gives you the amount you'll get in the new currency.

    Online Meeting, Presentation Tool

    WebEx.com
If a group of people needs to share documents and communicate back and forth, but can't get together, this on-the-Web option looks like an excellent possibility. It's fee based.

    PC to Fax, and Back

If you need to communicate with people who do not have computers, but do have fax machines, one of these services may be useful.
    FaxAway.com
    eFax.com

    Translating Among Languages

This free tool, also known as BabelFish, may be helpful for communicating with supporters and colleagues who speak other languages. You just paste or type in a message in any of the accepted languages, then specify which language to translate to. Not perfect, but good for getting (or giving) the sense of the message.
    World.AltaVista.com

    Free New Testament

The Revised King James New Testament is a free modern translation of the New Testament based on the King James Version. You can browse through it on line or download it to use.

    The English Bible
